Mario Silva joins Portuguese contingent in Cyprus

Six-month deal for defender

Mario SilvaFormer Porto left-back Mario Silva has moved to Cypriot side Doxa Katokopia on a free transfer, signing a contract until the end of the current season.

The experienced defender, who began his career with Boavista, is best remembered for being part of Jose Mourinho’s Porto squad between 2001-2004, where he was back-up to Nuno Valente. Silva also enjoyed spells abroad with Nantes in France and Spanish sides Recreativo Huelva and Cadiz.

Having returned to Boavista in 2006, 31-year-old Silva had recently become a free agent, and accepted the move to Doxa on a short-term deal. The club is already home to several Portuguese footballers, including Ernesto, Comboio, Savedra, Carlos Andre, Margaca and Nuno Rodrigues.
