Paulo Costa taken to hospital in Cyprus

Team-mate Pinto describes “barbaric challenge”

Paulo CostaAPOEL FC forward Paulo Costa was taken to hospital with suspected knee ligament damage and could miss the rest of the Cypriot season.

Costa, who moved from national champions Anorthosis Famagusta to APOEL in January, was carried off during the second half of his side’s Cypriot Cup match with Doxa Katokpia, following a reckless challenge from an opposition player.

Colleague and fellow Portuguese Helio Pinto confirmed following the match that the news on the injury appears grim. “I have tried to speak to him, but I haven’t yet been able to. It looks like he has suffered a ligament injury in the knee, but he will have to go for tests.

“The pitch was in very bad condition, and it was getting worse with every minute,” said Pinto, formerly of Benfica. “Then, in the second half, Paulo suffered a barbaric challenge from a Doxa player and we think it’s a serious situation.”

The injury comes as a major setback to Costa, who joined APOEL on a six-month deal last month, and had started brightly at his new club. Without Costa, Portuguese duo Pinto and Nuno Morais went on to defeat Doxa 3-2 to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Cypriot Cup.
