Portuguese abroad: Maniche, Paulo Machado set their teams on way to victory

Videos of Maniche goal

Saturday afternoon saw Portuguese midfielders Maniche and Paulo Machado both score their team’s opening goal, with Cologne and Toulouse going on to secure all three points in Germany and France respectively.

In the Bundesliga, Cologne made it back-to-back wins with a 2-1 victory at Frankfurt at the Commerzbank Arena. Both Maniche and fellow former Portuguese international Armando Petit started the match for Cologne, with Maniche getting the game’s opener on 59 minutes when he stabbed home having been set up by Sebastian Freis.

Frankfurt went on to level through Brazilian defender Chris (29) but an own goal from Marco Russ six minutes from time gave the visitors the victory. After a difficult start to the season, Cologne are now up to 12th place having lost just one of their last seven matches in the league.

Meanwhile, in France, Paulo Machado’s 52nd-minute goal set Toulouse on their way to victory at relegation-battlers Le Mans. It was the former Porto man’s third league goal of the season, and ultimately inspired a 3-1 victory for the visitors. Le Mans were without Joao Paulo Andrade, following his sending off against Bordeaux in midweek.
