Maniche: Stuttgart win can be springboard

Cologne struggling in Bundesliga

Having helped his side to their first win of the season over the weekend, former Portuguese international Maniche hopes the victory over Stuttgart can inspire Cologne to overturn their poor start to the new campaign.

Despite investing heavily during the summer to bring in Maniche as well as club hero Lukas Podolski from Bayern Munich, the Billy Goats saw themselves rooted to the bottom of the German table after failing to win any of their opening five matches.

However, with Maniche again partnered by former Portugal colleague Armando Petit in Zvonimir Soldo’s midfield, Koln surprised many by winning 2-0 away at last year’s third-place finishers Stuttgart.

“The victory was important, especially psychologically,” Maniche admitted. “Winning this game against Stuttgart was important, but even more important is the next win against Bayer Leverkusen. If we can do this, it can be a springboard for more victories and a better outlook. The current position of Cologne in the league does not match the value of the team.”

Cologne, now 17th in the Bundesliga with just five goals from six matches, host Jupp Heynckes’ unbeaten Leverkusen at the RheinEnergieStadion on Saturday afternoon.
