Unhappy Maniche eyeing Portugal return

Midfielder “90 percent likely” to leave Germany

Former Portugal international midfielder Maniche has revealed that he does not expect to remain with German side Cologne beyond this summer.

The former Porto man is about to finish his first season in the Bundesliga when Cologne play Nurnberg on Saturday. However, it has been a somewhat disappointing campaign for the midfielder, who in 25 appearances has scored twice and provided two assists as his team have spent the campaign in the bottom third of the table.

With his contract still having a year to run, reports suggest Cologne are keen to get Maniche’s considerable earnings off their wage bill. For his part, the 32-year-old believes his time at the RheinEnergieStadion is coming to an end.

“At the moment, I’m thinking about the last game in Nurnberg, and then I’ll decide my future. But it’s 90% certain I will move on,” he told German magazine Kicker.

“My family are not settled in Cologne. My children do not like their school here and I have to think about my family. They would like to go back to Portugal, but nothing is decided. I have many offers. I need to speak with the manager and then we will decide.”
