Antonio Conceicao leaves CFR Cluj post

Portuguese in surprise exit

Romanian league leaders CFR Cluj have announced the departure of manager Antonio Conceicao, less than six months after signing the Portuguese to a two-year contract.

The 47-year old, commonly known as Tony, was hired by the 2008 champions in April, and quickly guided the Transylvanian club to the Romanian cup, after which he was handed a contract extension until 2011.

Under Tony, Cluj won the Romanian Supercup at the start of the present season, and currently sit top of the league after thirteen rounds of the 2009/10 campaign. Having made it through the qualification phase of the Europa League, Tony’s men have struggled in the group stage, where they sit bottom of their section with two matches remaining.

A statement released by the club read:

Following discussions today, 14/11/2009, between the management of Club CFR 1907 Cluj and coach Antonio Conceicao (together with his colleagues) it has been decided to terminate by mutual agreement between the club and them the contract. F.C. CFR 1907 Cluj thanks Antonio Conceicao for his work and, especially, the results obtained: the Romanian Cup, Romanian Supercup and the current first position in the championship!
