Cadu: Cluj unaffected by coach change

Skipper ready for CL opener

Romanian champions CFR Cluj begin their Champions League campaign on Wednesday with a new coach at the helm. However, according to club captain Ricardo Cadu, the change will not disrupt the players ahead of their match with FC Basel.

Cluj fired double-winning coach Andrea Mandorlini following Friday’s defeat to Rapid Bucharest, which left the defending champions in 12th place in the Romanian Liga. The Italian has been replaced by Sorin Cartu, who takes charge of his first match when Swiss outfit Basel are hosted at the Dr Constantin Radulescu.

"We have changed coaches before so we're used to it; we know how to handle it," Cadu said on Tuesday. "Our league form hasn't been good enough and we know we must improve but we are players who get on with the job.

“I feel sorry for Mandorlini because by coaching us to the double he earned the right to lead us into the Champions League this season, but he is not here – now we have Sorin Cartu; we want to get started under him.

"Basel are a very good team – they have experienced players and their coach plays attacking football, but we're confident we can win."

Cartu is the sixth coach employed by the Transylvania club since they won their first Romanian championship in 2008. Cadu, along with fellow Portuguese Tony and Nuno Claro, remain from the Cluj side that competed in the Champions League the following season, when they caused a shock by beating Italians Roma in Italy and holding Chelsea to a draw at home.
