Video: Nuno Claro decisive as Cluj lift Supercup

CFR Cluj 2-2 Unirea Urziceni (Cluj win 2-0 on penalties)

Portuguese goalkeeper Nuno Claro was the hero as CFR Cluj prepared for next season’s Romanian league season kick-off by winning the SuperCup.

Cluj, who won the Romanian double last season, faced off against former champions Unirea Urziceni at the Dr. Constantin Rădulescu stadium in Cluj-Napoca. After ninety minutes of football, the teams were level at 1-1, and extra time brought another goal for both sides, meaning a penalty shootout to decide the outcome.

It was during the shootout that 33-year-old Nuno Claro was able to shine, saving three spot-kicks as his Cluj side won 2-0. Both sides missed their first penalties, with Claro seeing Laurentiu Marinescu’s effort for Unirea fly over the crossbar after Gabriel Muresan had missed the opener for Cluj.

Claro then proceeded to save three consecutive spot-kicks from Vasile Maftei, Pablo Brandan and Petre Marin. This meant Cluj were able to miss another themselves, but win the shootout by scoring two of their four kicks, through Felice Piccolo and Emil Dica.

As well as Claro, Cluj fielded captain Ricardo Cadu for the match, while defender Tony made an extra-time appearance. Meanwhile, former Cluj forward Antonio Semedo was introduced during the second half for Unirea.
