CFR Cluj champions of Romania again

Quartet of Portuguese players celebrate title triumph

CFR ClujThe Portuguese players of CFR Cluj celebrated becoming champions of Romania once again this Saturday, after their historic win two seasons ago. Cluj beat International Curtea de Arges 2-1 and won the title with one round of matches to spare.

As a result, Cluj qualify directly for the group stage of next season’s UEFA Champions League. Four Portuguese players received their championship medals on Saturday: captain Cadu, Tony, Dani and goalkeeper Nuno Claro.

They could also win a third consecutive Romanian Cup, and second double in three years, if they beat Vaslui in the final.

“It was a very difficult year for us. We are so glad because we shut the mouths of all those who criticised us. I have been here for three seasons, I’ve won two titles, but I have never seen our stadium like it was today. Our supporters were great!” Portuguese right-back Tony, one of the veterans of the team, told Romanian daily ProSport.

“Now we have to win the Cup also, after we suffered so much in this season.”
