Julio AlvesAtletico Madrid snap up Julio Alves

Rio Ave midfielder joins Silvio and Tiago in Spanish capital

Portuguese midfielder Julio Alves, the brother of Portugal international Bruno Alves, has transferred to Atletico Madrid.

Alves junior only played a handful of games for Rio Ave last season, but caught the eye with highly promising performances belying his age. He only turned 20 years old at the end of June.

The transfer fee has not been disclosed but Rio Ave president, Antonio Silva Campos, said it was “one of the best pieces of business ever done by the club.” The Vila do Conde outfit are thought to have been paid around 2 million euros by the Spaniards.

Alves is currently in Colombia preparing to respresent Portugal in the Under-20 World Cup which begins this coming weekend.

The move maintains Atletico Madrid’s strong tradition of contracting Portuguese players. Former Portugal midfielder Tiago recently turned his loan deal into a permanent move, and ex Braga right-back Silvio also moved to the Vicente Calderon in the summer. Maniche, Costinha and Simao have all played for Atletico in recent years.

I wish Alves the best.

I am afraid that Atletico is on the way down. The fire sale seems to be beggining, and they have brought in talent on the "cheap".
Whether it went into someones pocket or they over spent, it seems as if money has become a huge issue for the club.
