Simao keen on Atletico Madrid stay

Winger eyes new deal

Former Portugal international Simao Sabrosa says would like to extend his contract with Atletico Madrid beyond the end of the season, and insists he can play at the highest level for another four years.

The 31-year-old’s contract in the Spanish capital ends in June, with Simao coming towards the end of his four-year deal at the Vicente Calderon, but the impressive nature of his performances so far has led to speculation over whether the 85-time Portugal international will be offered terms on a new contract.

Although yet to be formally approached by Atletico, Simao insists that he will respect his current employers by resisting any approaches from elsewhere until his future is resolved. The winger may talk to other clubs from January with a view to a free transfer in the summer, but Simao says he wants to remain with Los Rojiblancos.

“When I arrived, I signed for four years and I’m still very happy here now,” he said. “I am part of the Atletico family. In my time here, I have been a good professional and have won two titles.

“I know there has been some contact from clubs through my agent, but nothing has been offered. I will not listen to any other offers until I have resolved my situation. I have a contract until June and that is something I respect, so I will not have contact with clubs until I know what they want to do with me here.

“I believe there is interest from both sides for me to continue at the club. If that is the case, I think the process of renewing could be done in one or two days, it would not be a problem.

“Both here and in Portugal people think that any player who reaches 30 is past his best in football. But I feel good physically; I’m settled at the club and believe I can play at a high level for another four years.”

Simao is very truthful with the quotes. I know he will be a fantastic player for another 4 years and shame he couldnt stay with the nt but with regret it was his time to go. He is part of those legends from the 04-06 class that we'll never forget and his maturity level is well beyond the elementary school kids who play on the current nt.
