Simao Sabrosa open to Atletico Madrid stay

Winger waiting on talks

Former Portugal international Simao Sabrosa has been talking about his impressive start to the season with Atletico Madrid, as doubts persist over his long-term future in the Spanish capital.

Simao is in the last year of his contract at the Vicente Calderon, having arrived in Spain on a 4-year deal from Benfica in 2007. There was much speculation over the summer that Altetico were keen to sell the winger, but nothing materialised and Simao has responded by beginning the new campaign as one of the team’s best performers, with three goals and three assists so far.

“I knew that this would be a very important season for me, so during the off season I tried to forget about everything that had happened before so that I could give everything from the start,” Simao told Madrid daily AS. “I wanted to play in the Super Cup. Some doubted I would be in condition to play, but I wanted to because I knew it would be the best way to start a great season.

“Criticism motivates me. It bothered me a little, but I knew everything would change if I started the season well. I never doubted myself. Last season, between Atletico and the Portugal team, I was involved in nearly 80 matches. People always want to see players in full flow, but it’s not easy with so many games.

“This season is huge for me because I am in the last year of my contract and although I don’t feel I have anything to prove to people, the hardest thing is always to maintain the level.

“In the summer, it was written that I was to be sold, but nobody spoke with me about that. I talked with the coach and he told me to do my best to get a place in the team. I am not playing like this is my last year; I am committed to the team. My agent will be speaking to the club and I think if there is an agreement from both sides, I will renew my contract. It depends on the club.”

I wouldn't mind Simao coming back to finish his career, the problem is that Simao still thinks he has a ton left.
Rui Costa came back for a ceremonial goodbye, Simao wouldn't be looking at it the same way.

I do think that Simao will leave Atletico in January, since Quique's ineptitude will continue.
To where, is the questions.
he isnt coming back

Simao is old and Benfica should spend their time developing their youth instead of taking in old players like Simao. Sorry boys!
I agree

I would love to see Simao return to finish his career at Benfica like Rui Costa did. He can still be a valuable part of this team for a few years.
