Video: Tiago goal sees Atletico go top

Spanish round-up

Portuguese international Tiago Mendes came off the bench to score what proved the winning goal as Atletico Madrid made it two wins from two at the start of the new Liga season.

Tiago replaced Jose Antonio Reyes with his side leading 1-0 with around twelve minutes of normal time remaining, and took just two minutes to double his team’s lead. The victory for Atletico follows last weekend’s 4-0 home win over Sporting Gijon, and means Quique Sanchez Flores’ side are the early pacesetters in the league standings.

Simao Sabrosa started the game for Atletico, and the recently retired Portugal international had a hand in both goals. Simao stepped over the ball following excellent work from Kun Aguero to leave Diego Forlan free to fire Atletico ahead (11’) and it was the former Benfica captain’s shot that was parried into Tiago’s path to make it 2-0, after Atletico had hit the hosts on the break ten minutes from the end.

On what was a highly satisfactory night for Portuguese in Spain, Ricardo Carvalho’s winner gave Real Madrid a 1-0 win over Osasuna, with Jose Mourinho selecting Pepe and Cristiano Ronaldo in his side. The result took on even more significance as Barcelona lost 2-0 at home to a Hercules side containing Tiago Gomes.

Both Miguel and Ricardo Costa started in defence for Valencia as Los Ches edged Racing Santander 1-0 at the Mestalla. Manuel Fernandes was not involved for the hosts following his exploits with Portugal, as Valencia joined Atletico in making it two wins from two so far in la Liga.

It was a good match from Atletico. Bilbao barely had any chances throughout the match with Godin doing excellent work in Atletico's defence.
