Video: Antonio Semedo, Nuno Morais on target

Portuguese abroad

On what proved an eventful night for the Portuguese footballers involved, there were important victories on Monday evening for Unirea Urziceni and APOEL FC, as the champions of Romania and Cyprus kept themselves in the thick of their respective title races.

Romanian champions Unirea, who recently celebrated a famous victory over Spanish side Sevilla in the Champions League, secured a 2-0 home win over Gloria Bistrita that meant the defending champions remain joint-top of Liga 1.

Portuguese striker Antonio Semedo (pictured), who was signed over the summer from Steaua Bucharest, opened the scoring on eight minutes with a well-taken goal, and Marius Bilasco nodded in the second with six minutes left on the clock to extend Unirea’s unbeaten league run to five matches.

In what looks to set to be an incredible title race, the Romanian top flight sees five teams all level on points, with Timisoara, CFR Cluj, Steaua Bucharest, Unirea and Vaslui all leading the way with 28 points from fifteen matches.

Meanwhile, Cypriot champions APOEL came from behind to win 2-1 away at AEL Limassol and rack up their eighth consecutive league victory, keeping them one point behind leaders Omonia. Again, a Portuguese was decisive, with midfielder Nuno Morais cancelling out Freddy’s opener to draw APOEL level on 51 minutes, before Mirosavljevic snatched all three points for APOEL.

Paulo Jorge and Helio Pinto were also in the APOEL side, while the hosts included Portuguese Junior and Miguel Vargas in their line-up. Having struggled to just one point from their opening three games of the new season, APOEL’s perfect record from their last eight games has come despite the distraction of their first ever campaign in the Champions League.
