Ulisses Morais appointed new Academica coachCoimbra club contract third manager of season![]() Speculation had linked Paulo Sousa, Augusto Inacio and Van der Gaag with the vacant post since Guilherme’s departure in the wake of the 1-0 defeat by Rio Ave on Sunday.
But the Academica board has plumped for Morais, who has plenty of experience, most of it successful, as regards relegation fights in the Portuguese top flight. Morais has previously managed Naval, Pacos de Ferreira, Maritimo, Gil Vicente and Estoril.
He becomes the club’s third coach this season. Both Jorge Costa (for personal reasons) and Jose Guilherme (due to poor results) resigned.
Academica are currently 13th in the league, with a record of five wins, five draws and ten defeats. After a highly promising start to 2010/11, the Estudantes have slipped alarmingly, with 6 defeats and 2 draws in their last 8 league matches.
Morais faces a difficult task if he hopes to immediately arrest the slide. Academica travel to high-flying Vitoria Guimaraes on Friday night.

There seems to be a lot of local support for the team in Coimbra, at least that is what the few expats in NJ from that region I have encountered have said. Hopefully they can avoid relegation.
