Europa League: Benfica waltz into semi-final, Porto crash out

Sílvio double fracture mars Benfica win

salvio-smiles-20130412.jpgTwo identical Rodrigo goals gave Benfica a comfortable win in Lisbon tonight to complete a 3-0 aggregate victory over AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League quarter-finals. It was a sad night for Portugal full-back Sílvio though, who fractured his tibia and fibula robbing him of a probable place in Portugal's World Cup squad.

FC Porto crashed out of the competition with a heavy defeat in Spain against Sevilla. An awful decision from the referee to award a penalty for a blatant dive gave the Spaniards the perfect start on 5 minutes, but the Dragons proceeded to fall apart. The tie was all but over on the half hour mark, with Sevilla 3-0 up, and the final 4-1 scoreline is one of Porto's heaviest defeats in Europe.

Europa League: Benfica with one foot in semi-finals, Porto gain narrow lead

Portuguese rivals beat AZ Alkmaar and Sevilla respectively

mangala-varela-20140403.jpgIt was another positive night for Portugal in the Europa League. Neither Porto nor Benfica put in a barnstorming performance, but both did enough to beat their Spanish and Dutch opponents by a single goal.

Mangala's first-half header gave the Dragons victory over Sevilla, but Porto will be without Jackson Martínez and Fernando in the second leg next week. Benfica coach Jorge Jesus again made a series of changes to his side, but the Eagles came away with a 1-0 win at AZ Alkmaar thanks to Salvio's strike.

Benfica and Porto progress to Europa League quarter-finals

Two 2-2 draws account for Tottenham and Napoli

quaresma-20140320.jpgAnother great night for Portuguese football! Despite the 1-0 lead brought from the Dragão a week ago, FC Porto did not manage to avoid their fair share of suffering, but were still able to follow Benfica's lead. The Eagles eliminated Tottenham Hotspur from the Europa League earlier in the evening with a 2-2 draw in Lisbon, and Porto knocked Napoli out with an identical scoreline in Italy.

The double triumph gives a precious contribution to Portugal's Uefa ranking coefficient and further boosts the reputation of the country's football in Europe. In the case of Porto, it could provide a crucial breath of fresh air in what has been a trying season for the Northern club.
