The news was not a surprise as rumours of the switch had circulated for days, but the duration of the contract was. The former Estoril tactician has been handed a four-year contract.

Lions win in Madeira to put pressure on rivals

Both Benfica and Porto had lost their league games at Marítimo this season, and the victory draws second place Sporting to within four points of leaders Benfica, while extending their lead over Porto to eight points, ahead of their rivals' games tomorrow.

Slimani sinks Porto

Sporting 1-0 Porto 

Sporting picked up their first win over Porto since February 2010 as in-form Islam Slimani scored the winner against Porto. The visitors finished the game with 10-men after Fernando was sent off in the 90th minute but there will be focus on the refereeing again as André Martins looked offside in the build-up to Slimani's goal.

Farcical officiating grabs the headlines in Setúbal

Vitória de Setúbal 2-2 Sporting

Referee Vasco Santos stole the show in what was perhaps the most poorly officiated game of the season. Sporting took the lead through a controversial goal from Islam Slimani just minutes after Adrien Silva's clean goal had been ruled out for offside. Setúbal equalised in the second half before two late and incorrect penalties at either end were both converted to mean both sides shared the points and Benfica moved further ahead of the Primeira Liga.

Sporting come from behind to win at Rio Ave

Substitutes Slimani and Mané decisive

The hosts were on top for the opening hour, and deserved their lead, albeit obtained fortuitously as Maurício turned a cross into his own net. But second-half substitutes Slimani and Mané scored fine goals in a strong final 30 minutes from Sporting to give the Lions all three points.
